A fandom idea that I've never really cared much for is Mega Smart Harry. Like...boy genius Harry Potter. Mr. Academic Harry Potter. It's always sorta sat wrong with me. Obviously there's nothing wrong with it, and if that's your jam, more power to you!

For reference, me talking about this got started from a post about Ken being a badass woman's (Barbie) himbo boyfriend. And got me thinking about how I'd like Hermione to have a himbo boyfriend. Which then got me back to thinking about "SUPER SMART HARRY" and how very lukewarm I am about it. The transition happened pretty rapidly, but I'm thinking it was along the lines of....

Hermione is our very intellectual queen, and we love that for her. And I love the idea of her having a partner who isn't like that. How fun for her to have a himbo hubby! But it's very surface level, in a way, because deep down what I'm feeling is....What I really like for Hermione is people who can really challenge her ideas and values. And having a partner who can show her the value and worth in other interests and other types of intelligence. I want her to be slapped in the face with "other people aren't dumb because they're not the same sort of smart as me." Which is a lesson I'd ideally like more people to learn.

For me, I really value how different people are, and what different people can bring to the table. And this difference in smarts is one of the many reasons I love Snarry. Severus is our more traditionally intelligent person, but Harry isn't actually dumb (though I do love to play on how others might perceive him that way) (even Severus!) Harry isn't Hermione, he isn't going to inhale every book that crosses his path, he isn't going to write the greatest essay in Hogwarts History, but he doesn't have to.

Me, for example. Math? Super not my strong suit. My brain sees a number and goes haywire. My brain struggles with numbers. And much as I may doubt myself in a million different ways, I don't actually consider myself to be a stupid person. People not being highly knowledgeable in the subjects you personally value doesn't mean those people aren't smart. There are all sorts of ways to be smart. There are all sorts of different skills and strengths for people to have. And if you personally value that more traditional, highly academic sort of book smarts, that's fine. But that doesn't mean there's no value in other types of smarts, too.

That's what I love about Harry. He likes his sports ball. He throws himself into danger. But he comes out as champion or hero, because he is smart. But he's smart in his own special way, rather than the Hermione way. And I always miss that Harry when he's turned into this extremely bookish boy.

Anyway I was having a good time thinking of Badass Barbie and Himbo Ken and then I was suddenly mad about the general population's perception of intelligence 😂
